EPISODE 58: DOES CANCEL CULTURE VIOLATE FREE SPEECH?
MAY 10, 2023. 25 MINS 49 SECS
The landscape today has evolved into one where political correctness and appropriate usage of terms like pronouns and points of reference for certain communities define the contours of one's creativity, authenticity, and ability to share their voice to stand up for certain issues that need addressing. Many who don't abide by these norms of wokery find themselves in the abyss of cancel culture, deprived of work and opportunities. On the other hand, we have political bigwigs and business moguls who brazenly dish out views ranging from controversial statements to misogynistic or transphobic declarations, only to get away with it. How much is too much? Where do we draw the line? This session looks at cancel culture as a new form of free speech that is both an outcry against social injustice and a threat to the very fabric of free speech itself.

EPISODE 57: IDENTITY CLASH - A BATTLE FOR RIGHTS AND EQUALITY
APRIL 19, 2023. 28 MINS 57 SECS
In the recent past, the emphasis on protecting the rights of marginalized and minority groups has grown in power, giving rise to ambiguities related to politically correct and socially acceptable norms related to the use of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and terms of address as well as representations in books, movies, television, music, art, and more. A case in point is the conflict we're seeing between certain groups of trans people and people whom they call TERFs, or Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists, who are separately campaigning for justice, protection and access to women who have experienced rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, and honor crimes. Where do we draw the line? Does protection of one or more of these groups come at the expense of protecting the rights of another group? This session looks at loopholes in gender recognition acts and related policies, addressing what measures of inclusion we really need to ensure a harmonious coexistence of different social identities.

There's some good news for tweens and teens in California: fewer heads down on classroom desks for afternoon siestas. California Gov. Newsom's law, which went into effect July 1, 2022, mandates that high school classes cannot start earlier than 8.30 a.m. and middle schools cannot begin earlier than 8 a.m. Similar bills are under consideration in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, following years of campaigning by parents, not-for-profits and sleep experts who argue that chronic sleep deprivation due to early school start times is harming the health of teens and tweens. This live episode looks at pressures to optimize the economics of bus fleets in terms of the influence of pick-up/drop-off schedules on earlier start times, and the possibility of altering schedules to standardize later school start times across India and the US.
